MET 2020: What, where, when and why.
Guest, one more day in which we remember last Monday, May 4, as a date that annually celebrates the most anticipated event in the fashion world. We tell you all the details of what would have happened this 2020 at the Met Gala.
What is the Met Gala?
Organized and chaired by Anna Wintour since 1995, the Met Gala has become a much-loved annual celebration of fashion. Billed as a fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, it’s a time to mark the opening of its annual fashion exhibition. Year after year, the event raises eight-figure sums; the 2019 edition raised a record $15 million. Each year, the event hosts some 600 attendees.
If you are lucky enough to be on the guest list, then you don’t pay to attend. If you are not on the list, but have managed to secure a chance to attend, tickets are priced at around $30,000 each, with tables costing around $275,000.
Who is invited to the Met Gala?
Until the night before the event, the guest list is secret. But some of the biggest names in the business attend regularly, from Beyoncé and Lady Gaga to Madonna and Rihanna. Most of the time, designers attend with their muses like Brandon Maxwell and Lady Gaga, and Alexander Wang and Hailey Bieber.
What happens at the Met Gala?
It is a secret. For this reason, guests must comply with the no phones (and, therefore, no social media) policy. However, the rule has previously been broken by a group of celebrities taking selfies in the bathroom in 2017. The event usually involves a high-profile artist, and guests always explore the gallery before sitting down together for dinner.
When was the 2020 Gala postponed?
The gala was postponed indefinitely on March 16, due to public health concerns about the possible spread of Covid-19. Already later in the month, the renowned New York City museum had announced it was closing ”until further notice” after two employees of the facility showed symptoms. Vogue USA editor-in-chief and Condé Nast global content advisor Anna Wintour released a statement on the cancellation of the event.
“Due to the Metropolitan Museum’s inevitable and responsible decision to close its doors, ”About Time,” and the opening night gala, will not take place on the scheduled date.”
What would have been the theme of Met 2020?
As every year, a theme is set, and it was Andrew Bolton, curator of the Costume Institute, who found the inspiration for the Met 2020 theme and exhibition, specifically in Sally Porter’s 1992 film Orlando. He recalled a scene in which actress Tilda Swinton enters the labyrinth in an 18th-century French-style woman’s gown, as I walk her through her clothes, changes into a mid-19th-century dress, and reappears in 1850s England.
‘About Time: Fashion and Duration, ”is a reimagining of fashion’s fragmented, discontinuous and heterogeneous history,” Bolton says. The curator will divide 160 women’s garments into two sections throughout the exhibition. The first section will be a timeline of all-black looks and the second section will focus on white outfits with added color. ”It’s a very rational and regulated chronology of fashion from 1870 to 2020, the timeline of modarnity,” Bolton comments.
When was the Met Gala originally scheduled?
Originally scheduled for the first Monday in May, that would have fallen on a Monday, with red carpet arrivals starting around 7pm EDT.
Who is hosting the Met Gala 2020?
The 2020 Met Gala would have been hosted in part by Nicolas Ghesquière, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Meryl Streep, Emma Stone and Anna Wintour. In 2019, Lady Gaga, Harry Styles and Serena Williams shared hosting duties.
So far we have solved all your doubts, we are looking forward to 2021 to enjoy the looks of the guests at the Met, and you?
