Fashion designer Elsa Barreto was born in 1966 in Braga, Portugal. Her interest in fashion began at an early age, creating clothes for her own dolls, and later for herself and her friends.

In 1987, Elsa graduated from the Porto Fashion Academy winning the national New Talents competition in her final year.
